I'm not sure Kuwait's example applies everywhere else in OPEC (I've long believed Iraq and Libya both have more oil than common estimates show for example).

Even the Saudi situation seems cloudy to me - not that I claim to know as much as Matt Simmons or The Oil Drum folks on the topic - but I did see some stats that said that the Saudis have just a small percentage of the number of rigs operating in the US and Russia. This could indicate that they do indeed have a long way to go and they are still exploiting the easy (huge) fields at this stage. Otherwise you have to conclude that their geology is an anomaly and all their oil is pooled in just a few giant fields.

But it does add to the concern that we are now around the peak.

If you ignore global warming, there is still plenty of coal-to-liquids, tar sands oil and LPG to come to make up for depletion in the next few years at least.

Maybe the Mayans picked the "all liquids" peak date...
