Great exposition of a troubling trend. These organizations are precisely the ones needed to prevent the rise of a 'rhizome' alternative to the heirarchies of today. Couple their capabilities with the NSA invasion of personal communication and the status quo can both maintain itself indefinitely, and deny any colateral damage that may arise.

The point of this social processes is to explicitly deny human rights and focus on either corporate, client, class or nation rights. In every case, rights of heirarchy.

If we are in the period of peak oil, then control of oil is more important than production of oil. I expect an elite would want to produce only enough to meet their own needs and the minimum needs of those who 'work' for them.

Most public debate is still framed in terms of 'national policies' that are expected to meet the needs of the majority. Yet we have instead an end run around the 'public' and the emergence of a ruling elite. A return of the king. The public will be lulled into accepting the 'waste' of elections in the same way they accept the NSA spying, the Iraq lying, and the ecology dying.

Or the consumer of commodities that are extracted under conditions (as in the Rio Tinto example above) that require security (generally to facilitate the extraction without paying much to the disaffected local population). The actual end-soldier gets paid anywhere from $100/day (probably someone recruited from el salvador) to $1300/day (generally former SEAL or British SAS), also depending on the level of risk.

Part of the problem is the nature of "Cost-Plus" contracting. Many (most?) of the contracts in Iraq to people like KBR are designated "Cost-Plus." This means that the government pays all of KBR's expenses, generally without any scruitiny as to their reasonableness, and then pays them a pre-determined profit % on top of those expenses. So if KBR needs 10 security personnel, they can hire them from Triple Canopy for $3.0 million per year, then bill that directly to the government contract, and get paid an additional $600k (20%) pre-determined profit on top of that. Just an example.

Who ultimately pays the $500 to $1000 per day that these meatheads earn to swagger around around Baghdad with big guns? Isn't it the taxpayers? Halliburton contracts to build an infrastructure project. The project workers need protection, so H. bills Uncle Sam for the protection.
