There was this guy who believed very much in true love and decided to take his time to wait for his right girl to appear. He believed that there would definitely be someone special out there for him, but none came.

I liked reading about this when it was originally posted. I've seen this community concept popping up more recently in various "survival" blogs --and I've done my part to encourage it as well. I'm glad you've returned to this topic. Hopefully, it will encourage people to study more history and understand that going "lone wolf" won't work for long when the going gets really tough.

After easy-energy is gone, food becomes limited and the bottleneck is underway, there will be many types of communities and the attitudes the residents have toward outsiders will vary --just like tribes, clans, etc did in mankind's not so distant past.

Some suggestions for sustainability:
ALL taxes should be put on sales. The accumulation of stuff is the reason most government services are needed. This is the feedback that should be used to moderate the heirarchy. Tie the size of the tax to a vote.

Second: What is the purpose of the humans to start with? I suggest reading "Life as Anti-Entropy" by Schroedinger (available at Dieoff.org).
A species survives if it creates some future usefulness (via offspring, etc) over and above its consumption level. THAT's the heart of evolution which demonstrates that survival of the most 'fit' for the environment is a cooperative as well as competitive behavior.

What is the Net Creativity of the people: individually, locally, regionally, and globally? Cities may even be a part of a Net Creative species, but the consumption must be paid for with increased usefulness, not just more activity.

Also: Before evaluating possible energy sources, be SURE that there aren't already sources which have been purposely removed from the public purveyance. I know I'm not confident that what we see is all there is.

I find your notion of hierarchy, as explained here and in A Theory of Power, very insightful. On a theoretical level, however, the root cause of hierarchy isn't clear to me. If hierarchy is a pattern of organization common to many different kinds of organization, and, that which is the same has the same cause, then the emergence of hierarchy in these different organizations must be due to common factors. We see that organizations such as the state, corporations, labor unions, and certain religious groups (such as the Catholic Church) all have a hierarchical structure. Why? Franz Oppenheimer argues in The State that the hierarchical nature of the state (and hence society) comes about and is maintained by violence. Since I find his argument compelling, I'm afraid I have to disagree with your explanation that it comes about through specialization and dependency. But if hierarchy is produced through violence in the case of the state and society, does that mean that it applies to the other organizations? I just don't know. What do you think?

I apologize for the abstract posting (I hope its not too off-topic) but I think it's important to identify the factor or factors that lead to hierarchy so that they can be guarded against in a rhizome-like organization.

Fascinating, and very attractive. One thing you say is, "I have placed the threshold of self-sufficiency at the familial group level."

This sort of dovetails with my own thinking about the need to return to the extended family, in which all members pool their resources and work together. I arrived at this conclusion by foreseeing the demise of pensions (both public and private) and other “nest egg” instruments, of rest homes and retirement communities, and of other institutions that have, in this small window of human history, made the nuclear family social model possible.

I can't see the hamlet economy developing to any great extent under current circumstances because our systems of government are hierarchical and centralized, and trying to undo or circumvent that will not go over well. However, as industrial civilization grinds to a halt and power structures crumble, power vacuums are going to arise in many places. Will we allow petty dictators to step into those vacuums, or will we take the initiative and create rhizome socioeconomic systems? Now's the time to start thinking and organizing.

My only problem with implementing and non-hierarchal or non-growth economy is that in order to implement it everywhere is has to grow. The whole reason our growth based economies emerged was because they out-competed non-growth economies. So really what you are saying, is a non-growth based economy will have to out-compete a growth based economy, which I could actually see in an era of resource depletion.

I've arrived at a similar vision of a hamlet economy a few years ago. For me it has always been a question of how are we going to be building a bridge from this economy that one? Perhaps most importantly how fast does it need to happen?

I like to prepare for worst case scenario. What if as a country we never formally recognize the need for this economy and encourage it through market action? Will the hamlet economy be able to evolve out of necessity?
I'm actually cautiously optimistic that so long as open source efforts remain available we can construct resilent economic systems out of even the most brittle suburban economic structures.

Increasing food production resilency can be accomplished quite quicky and easily in suburban areas of many different climates. Energy production too could probably go this way fairly quickly. Imagine old SUV imagines powered by agricultural waste derived ethanol, or wood gas producing 50kW of electrical power and 100kW of thermal power. Wind and solar could be thrown n the mix and a diverse microgrid could evolve fairly quickly, right?

I guess I'm rambling, but my question at this point is will the hamlet structure ever be encouraged by formal entities like states and corporations, or will it be an open source affair developed in parralell to crumbling heirarchies?
